Learning From New Peers In Class/ Intro to My Blog

One of the best decisions I have ever made was to choosing to study in the United States. If you are wondering why, the reason is quite simple. I have always been in love with culture. Before leaving my home country (Nigeria), I was just excited to learn about America. I assumed there was major American culture with a couple subcultures stemming from this "American Culture". But, I was wrong.  Little did I know that my journey to America would also exposed to a world of diversity! This blog will focus of my cultural experience with the aid of my HONORS 401 class (Social [In]Justice). At the end of the class, I hope to keep reflecting on my intercultural experiences throughout my remaining journey in my university and beyond. For now, let's focus on the class.

Learning from peers

What:
The first day of class was an introduction to the course and the concept of global citizenship. I can already tell the class would be a great learning environment after meeting my classmates and listening to the professor. At the beginning of the class, we (students) marked on a world map, the different places we called home. For an ice breaker, we played a diversity game which helped us (the students) connect and learn a little bit about ourselves. I was also teamed with a partner and we got to share some stories about ourselves.

So What:
I am very excited to learn about the cities and countries my classmates and professor come from. I an also excited to learn cultures in the United States and other parts of the world. Through this, I am also seeking to learn about myself as explained in the article "Cultural Leaders are Made:Cultivating Cultural Leaders Through Experiential Learning" by Dr. Dahlman. I will focus on actively participating in cultural activities and reflecting on my experiences with these activities.

Now What:: I plan to learn more about the American culture by participating in events that  depict the complex culture in America, especially in Minnesota. I will also plan to learn about other cultures by participating in cultural nights/events and organizations. For example, I plan to be involved in the French club in other to expand my understanding of the French language and culture.
